“HEY, YOU’RE back!”
Jack staggered under the impact of a hundred and forty pounds of ginger-haired Scot as he stepped through the door into the open-plan corporate security office. He held on to his backpack with grim determination—not wanting to have to replace three laptops and a slate on his first day back—and only realized, once he’d found his balance, that breath was hard to come by. The arms around his ribs were doing a damn good job of trying to strangle the life out of him.
“What the fuck did I do?” he wheezed, and it must have been the right thing to say, since Frazer let him go and stepped back.
“What?”
“What did I do that I must be strangled on the doorstep on my first day back?”
“Jackass!” Frazer blushed crimson and Jack laughed.
“Horwood, actually. You got it almost right. Now explain yourself.”
“Can’t I just be pleased that you’re back? Especially given that you didn’t want to go, and I kept seeing stuff about exploding warehouses in the news?”
“You were that worried about me? Damn, that’s sexy,” Jack mock-growled, getting a fist in his shoulder for the effort.
“Cut it out, jerk,” Frazer flushed with embarrassment, but he didn’t back down or retract the words. “You know I don’t swing that way.”
“Sorry.” Jack wasn’t sorry at all. “I’m still a bit behind.”
“On what? Enough sex to switch on your brain-mouth filter? Talk to Flynn about that, not me.”
Jack couldn’t help the startled laugh that escaped him. He’d hoped that Frazer wouldn’t struggle too badly picking up Jack’s slack and keeping his secrets, but this new, confident persona was so much better than anything he could have dreamed up.
As long as it wasn’t defiance.
The Scot had changed in the three months Jack had been gone. Still slight, he carried a bit more muscle and moved around the corporate security office as if he owned the place. Jack would have applauded the change wholeheartedly if he hadn’t had the feeling that something was wrong. And that he was not going to like it when he found out what it was.
“Okay, explain it to me,” Jack said after Frazer had spent two hours catching him up to speed on current threat levels, project work, the state of the servers, and the improvements he’d made to the network.
“Explain what?”
“The frown lines between your brows, the extra muscle, and this rather abrasive coating you’ve acquired while I was gone.”
“You told me not to take shit from anyone.”
Jack leaned back in his chair, folded his hands behind his head, and went so far as to prop his feet on the edge of the conference table. None of it riled the Scot and that alone was telling. Having been brought up the youngest in a huge family, Frazer usually was a stickler for manners. “I’m glad to see that you don’t. Just how much shit did you have to deal with while I was gone?”
Frazer deflated a little. “I hate all that emo crap.”
That was a surprising comment out of Frazer’s mouth.
